SFX - MUSIC BED
GREGORY BRATTON (ANNOUNCER): Hello, good people of audio fiction land! This is Gregory Bratton, Writer/Producer/and voice of Inspector Virlo Morton Lee, a family-friendly(ish) comedy whodunit. Today, I am going to play you a single scene from Episode 6 entitled We’ll Have a Barrel of Fun. Like most of the other nominees, this is a serialized show, so some spoilers lurk ahead. (shudders)
In this clip, the Inspector has been led by Deputy Dundie out to a riverside shack in an attempt to discover a drug dealing murderer. And like any good mystery, there’s a thunderstorm.
SFX - THUNDER
GREGORY BRATTON: Of course. Our show has been fortunate enough to have been nominated for 7 Audio Verse Awards including New Audio Play Production, Performance of a Leading Role in a New Audio Play Production, Writing of a New Audio Play Production, Action and Environment Sound Design in a New Production, as well as nominations in the Music and Directing Categories.
Regarding the directing, all of our lines were recorded locally by all first-time voice actors. A couple had some stage experience, but this was the first time in front of a microphone. And the way the process went was: I would say the line the way I heard the voices in my head say it, they would repeat the line into the microphone in their own voice, and by some miracle when I got to the editing phase, everything sorta just came together. I was as surprised as anyone.
As far as the music, please check out the song that birthed this entire project. The song came first and the idea of an audio drama came much later. I think you’ll really get a kick out of it.
So, one last thing before I drop you off in the woods. In episode 1 we set up the fact that we were hearing everyone via just-a-little-bit-better than our reality mini lapel mics that our young journalist was clipping to everyone who would stand still long enough.
That concept heavily factors into the sound design choices in this scene. So, without further ado, Episode 6, Scene 5… Oh, and the Inspector is terrified of waterfalls. Hey! Don’t judge.
