Hey everyone, Daniel here, your narrator and GM for the HappyGoLukky Podcast which I and my two daughters and two sons produce in an actual play format on a weekly basis.
If you are new to the actual play genre … it means that we are actually playing a role playing game together, so that our story is all improvisation … while I have a general sense for where I want the story to go as the Game Master .. the actual stories themselves are generated on the fly with a little bit of dice rolling and some light rules to keep things interesting.
We also have some unique features in our show. For instance, we have an entire sub story that is all audio drama that flows along with each main episode.
Each of our players, Katherine, Hannah, Joshua and Mason all play various parts on the show and, yes I am their dad… unlike other role playing games they know only what they discover during the game play itself, which means they are often learning things as you are learning them and so have authentic reactions to surprising turns in the story. You’ll experience one of those in this episode with Katherine’s character Angela.
Each of them plays a young adult between the ages of 14 and 18, and our show is targeted toward the young adult audience or essentially ... 10 years old and up … producing free fun and family friendly content is really important to us … largely because I wanted to introduce my own kids to role playing games but the majority of what we found was … not so family friendly.
The first season is based on the real world events that take place in and around Centralia, Pennsylvania beginning in the 1980’s but covering events in the 1960s, 1860s and into the future.
The episode you are about to listen to, which is Episode 18 ..takes place outside of Centralia as Katherin’s Character Angela is trying to discover the truth about her legacy by finding out what happened to her grandmother… and it is a little more than midway through our first season, so it may be a bit confusing at first.
In broad strokes, we have created a fictionalized story based real world events … it’s a bit of historical fiction with a dose of science fiction and a dash of mystery as each character has to discover who they are and what their role is in connection to everything that is happening around them.
