Hello Listeners,
The breathtaking poems of Sangam poets sang about nature, love, bravery and the life of people. The Sangam poems could be categorized into two main branches in terms of subject.
THE INTERIOR, AKAM &
THE EXTERIOR, PURAM form their two overarching themes.
Until now, I was talking about the AGAM poems in all their magnificent splendour which actually enumerated the love and domestic life of people. Agam means inner, mind, self or home. Agam poems possess a deeply personal character. On the other hand, akam poems explore the multifaceted facets of love, encompassing clandestine and forbidden love, marital bliss and unfaithfulness, as well as the emotions of parting and reunion. Again there is a lovely convention of not using any names in these agam poems. So the poems could be applied to anyone surpassing all times. The reader can relate to the poem very closely.
The other branch PURAM talks about the public life of people, the bravery and charity of kings and the wars. This is called PURAM meaning the outer, public life or exterior. PURAM poems refer to many kings, the names of them being explicit or implied. The PURAM poems encompass all other aspects of worldly life: Wars and battlefields, the munificence of kings and chieftains and the wisdom of bards. Another 100-odd episodes will be presented in the PURAM genre in the ensuing episodes which will definitely be a feast for your ears catering to your thirst for knowledge and ever-expanding horizon of Intellect.
