ABOUT THE POEM

This is a translated version of an epic poem OUT FOR ANY HUMILIATION from Tamil literature. It is a fervent outcry of a boy to his lover’s friend. He affirms that he is ready to face any type of humiliation and even be an object of ridicule in the public’s eyes when the blinding passion of love for his sweetheart overwhelms his heart

OUT FOR ANY HUMILIATION

Ready to fall head over heels

The lunatic lover fraughts

Even to mount a palm-stem horse

and sport a ring of milkweed buds

besides being an object of ridicule

of the public locale

he is out for any remonstration

while the blinding energy of adoration

overpowers his heart with veneration
