ABOUT THE POEM:

The poem PANGS OF NOSTALGIA reflects a deep sense of nostalgia and sorrow as the speaker reminisces about the carefree and joyful days of their childhood. The memories are vivid and full of life: playing with young girls who held clay dolls, swimming together in a cool pond, and climbing the low branches of a marudam tree with a close-knit group of friends. These were times of innocence and unbridled happiness, where there were no secrets, and the world seemed simple and pure.

The speaker recalls the thrill of jumping into the deep pond, the astonishment of onlookers, and the triumph of emerging with handfuls of sand from the bottom. These actions symbolize the adventurous spirit and fearless nature of youth.

However, as the poem progresses, there is a poignant shift. The speaker laments the loss of those golden days, recognizing how the passage of time has changed everything. The once vibrant and energetic youth has now grown old. The physical signs of aging—coughing, stumbling, and relying on a cane—highlight the inevitable decline that comes with time. The poem ends on a melancholic note, with the speaker reflecting on how those innocent and joyous days are now distant memories, overshadowed by the frailties of old age.

The nostalgic and reflective tone of the poem, emphasizes the memories of childhood once-vibrant past, now distant and echoing lingers in the speaker's mind, now distant yet still resonant.

PANGS OF NOSTALGIA

To think of past days brings grief untold

Holding the hands of girls at play

By the pond’s cool edge, where memories unfold.

We joined in their games, with laughter to sway,

Dancing together, as joy intertwined,

And leapt from the marudam tree, no fears to betray.

With friends so dear, no secrets confined,

We climbed the marudam, its branches low

And plunged with a splash, leaving worries behind.

Now those carefree days are gone, where did they go?

As age catches up, we cough, with a stumble and sigh,

Leaning on a staff, burdened by time's brutal flow.

Note: marudam :Terminalia arjuna is a tree of the genus Terminalia. It is commonly known as arjuna or arjun tree in English.
