ABOUT THE POEM

This is a translated version of the romantic poem VILLAGE WHISPERS from Tamil literature. It is a clarion call of the girl’s friend intensifying her hopes about marriage in a very positive note. She encourages her friend by telling that the whole village is rife with whispers about their affair which has the approval of both her parents.

VILLAGE WHISPERS

The sprightly blue blossoms

of the Mulli plants

with bended spikes

blow over in the breeze

and lie dispersed

all around the sand

close to the waters

like pearls dissipated from a messed-up jewelry

It's an open secret

where your man hail  from

I approve of him,

your mother likes him

your father supports him

town gossip is rife with

associating you with him
