Meet Jamie Schmidt, a stunning non-binary soul who Maya + Elle crossed paths with (and fell in love with) in music school. We recount our origin stories with one another, reflecting on the operatic oddities we endured in our conservatory-esque education. Jamie reflects on their performance roots, noticing a parallel to their lifelong journey with gender dysphoria: “My experience performing has been me playing a character, who’s playing a character… playing a man, who’s playing a man.”
They recount the way they’ve reckoned with sexuality vs. gender since the age of three, remembering the way they voiced, “I am a girl,” often in their youth. We deeply honor gender as the construct it is, overlaying the spiritual perspective that all labels are a veil to the mind - an attempt to organize this absurd and magical human experience. As Jamie perfectly says, "We’re born into a world that’s trying to predestine everything we do: name, gender, class, geographical location… don’t forget you’re the designer of your own life.”
We also have the privilege of holding Jamie’s story of being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and the liberating, gratitude-filled reframe they’ve taken on around their body’s breakdown into illness. We bless the good, the bad, and the ugly of this life.
