Welcome and thank you for returning. Amy continues her story, and we get to join her on her journey, losing herself in a controlling abusive relationship. She describes the continued physical, psychological abuse and the toll it began to take on her mental wellbeing. The assault to the brain is what she describes within this toxic relationship that sways from love bombing to full blown verbal and physical attacks. Amy describes how she realised after joining a womens programme that sexual abuse was also part of her story and consent was not part of the relationship. She goes from being a carefree, independent, fun loving young women to a stressed, anxious, isolated, dependent woman where addiction to prescription drugs and cannabis is the only way to numb everything out. The car, home and great gestures of love in the form of lavish gifts ended up as debts in her name. The story which starts as a fairy tale has turned full circle. The only person Amy has to turn to for support is her mum- Jo!
This will be upsetting for some, but it highlights the need for a trauma informed empathic approach to be used by all. If your child is school age and you have concerns, ask to speak to your schools safeguarding lead and request that your child and you receive support for Domestic Abuse. Since 2021 The |Domestic Abuse Bill recognised and named children exposed to domestic abuse are also ‘victims of Domestic Abuse’, and should be supported and protected as such.
