Her hand was never
more holy than now,
gripped like a lifeboat
of rescue and solace,
interlaced with innocence
and tiny bone perfection,
the road-weary rudder
of empty tummies
and fitful sleeping.
Hand extended—hush, hush,
Fear suspended—sleep, sleep,
Was this how Jesus felt when
the three words winds responded to
were “Hush, be still”
and he held the ocean’s rage
within the quiet well of his wholeness?
yes
That’s how she felt when
the wailing stopped,
her body’s son relaxing
in the singular grasp
of her voice
singing out
his name.

I have been singing my children to sleep since they were babies. As I hold their exhaustion close to my heart, I feel God encircle me and hold me, singing to me, pulling my head close to listen to the sacred dance of mothering hearts.
