Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? The answers to these questions are key to how your kids will live their lives. The Bible has a lot to say about these big questions. For example, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV. According to the Bible, which Christians believe is the Word of God, everything that exists was created by God for specific reasons. Humanity has a purpose (to worship and glorify God), a place (adoption into the family of God), value (so loved by God that He gave his only Son to save us from our sin), design (made in God’s image), and future (whoever believes in Jesus Christ will be forgiven their sins and inherit eternal life with God.)
Today’s culture also has a worldview. It is generally opposite to what the Bible lays out. Many Biblical principles were evident in the foundations of our culture. They were, in fact, the reason for our great national success. These Biblical fundamental truths are being eroded way. Modern culture is anti-Christian and anti-Bible in every way. Whatever the Bible calls good, is being repainted and recast as the new evil. What the Bible identifies as evil is being repainted as good. We are raising kids in very convoluted times.
Fathers have a great challenge before them. How can we raise healthy, strong kids who are willing to be the only one in the room that stands for the truth? It’s hard to stand alone in a culture that ridicules and persecutes your beliefs, but that is what our kids must have the strength and courage to do. Otherwise, they will not maintain their Biblical foundations. The culture swallows the minds and hearts of “Christian” kids every day. It targets all truth for destruction and embraces any perversion of morality as good and noble.
I believe we must parent in such a way as to raise brave leaders. To be a follower of Christ is to swim against the current. That takes strength of mind and convictions. Our kids can’t be people-pleasers or they will waffle under the pressure of other people’s opinions. Our culture will accept any belief, so long as it is not Judeo-Christian. We fathers must aim high and work tirelessly to build strength into our kids’ hearts and minds.
In the rest of this section, I will discuss a few of the dangerous worldviews our culture is serving up like a buffet at the lunch counter. We must teach our kids about the so-called “wisdom” of the world so they can see the difference between the truth and its many distortions.
