Why does our modern culture cling to an evolutionary explanation of the world with the fervor of religious zealots? It serves their purposes better than any philosophy or religion ever invented. It removes God from man’s understanding of life. If God doesn’t exist, man has no responsibility to live as his creator wishes. Mankind has always wished to rule himself. So man embraces a Godless philosophy to promote himself to the position of chief decision-maker and highest authority. As one who bristles under authority, I can see the attraction of being the king of my life. Can’t you?
I see two major problems with this. First, if I believe, really hard, that I am Superman, it doesn’t make it true. My words lack the power to shape the fabric of reality. Similarly, someone might wish that God did not exist, but saying that it is so doesn’t have the slightest effect on reality. If God exists, it seems ridiculous that He could be so vulnerable to His creation’s whims. According to the Bible, speaking something into existence is one of God’s abilities. He spoke the world into existence. “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Genesis 1:3 NIV. We should be concerned with what is true, not what we find to be most convenient. If the hard evidence indicates a Maker, we edit him out of our lives at our peril.
Secondly, the results of the evolutionary religion are easy to study. Since the publishing of Darwin’s On The Origin of Species in 1859, evolution has been embraced by many nations. Recent history seems to indicate that when mankind removes God from their worldview, they justify many atrocities including genocide and infanticide at a deplorable rate.
Atheism is the belief that there is no God, which is to say, that man is god. This religion has been adopted by many people for many reasons. Many people are offended by the Judeo-Christian God because He isn’t doing things the way they would if they were God, and so they reject His existence altogether. “If God is good, how can He allow suffering?” is followed by a full-scale rejection of God as a concept. Other people observe hypocrisy in Christians and reject God on that basis. “If God were real, that person would not be such a fraud.”
Still, others cannot accept the possibilities of miracles. The Bible is the story of how God created the universe, an astounding miracle. Something from nothing. Amazing. Throughout history, God has stepped into the lives of men and women to reveal His nature and redemptive plan. First God made Himself known to Adam and Eve who walked with God in the cool of the evening, but then they disobeyed God and created a rift of sin between God and mankind. All of human history is the story of God stepping into the lives of His creation. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He brought the descendants of Israel out of Egyptian slavery with a series of miracles that are still celebrated or doubted today. The prophets received the words of God and predicted the coming Messiah in great detail. An amazing miracle that changed the world occurred with the birth and life of Jesus Christ who fulfilled these prophecies. The virgin birth. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The feeding of the five thousand. The transfiguration. The miracles abound. The blind see. The deaf hear. The dead rise from the grave. One of God’s greatest tools to demonstrate His character is the miracle. For God, who created the universe with his words, miracles are not strenuous.
