The next few episodes will be about my trip to China in the summer of 1983. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and I believe it was a unique opportunity to see China during a historically unprecedented transition. After Mao died in 1979, the country opened up to Western visitors in a broad way and it was a chance to almost walk through the past because there were few so-called modern conveniences and yet so much national excitement for the country to burst into a new era and catch up to its fellow super powers. Little did we know where that fervor would lead them...
