For my money's worth, you're always going to need an element of luck. You can't account for how and when it happens, but you can actually increase the surface area with which luck with stick to you. There's plenty of anecdotal evidence. And while I can't back these ideas with science per se, it does harken back to the notion of the "law of attraction".
