If you live in a major city or close to one, you likely just flush the toilet, turn on the range in the kitchen and run the water without thinking about it. You just pay your bill when it comes and that's that. That's the way it's been for us for 52 years. Since we bought a house in NC, we had to get used to a whole new set of "things." Like where the "stuff" goes when I flush my toilet since we don't have public sewer out here!
