Timeouts work because they allow your brain to reset on a chemical level. Agitation, stress, and frustration begin to pump out neurotransmitters in your brain that begin to make it very difficult to operate from the rational part of your brain (prefrontal cortex). Taking a timeout allows for these chemicals to be absorbed into the body and your rational brain space to operate once again. This is why “sleeping on it” is a great approach to many things in life.
