The 1997 NHL draft class was getting comparisons to the famed 1979 draft just like the 93 class was. 93 didn't meet those lofty expectations but was a good draft. The top 4 in this draft class is pretty damn special, and then the draft falls off a FREAKING CLIFF!! In terms of expectations vs results, it has to be one of the biggest busts of a draft in league history. After going over it, frankly, I don't know how anyone believed it was going to be so good even at the time! The dead puck era made drafting in the mid to late 90's as big of a crapshoot as we've ever seen, which makes these drafts so fun to cover! Colin and I have a lot of fun at the expense of this draft. Not to mention some commercials that don't age well, the Tyson vs Holyfield fight is advertised during this draft and takes place exactly one week later, it's almost a surreal time in sports to look back on.
