About ONE STEP TOO FAR:
Tim O’Day has been missing for five years. His disappearance wasn’t the first in the Popo Agie Wilderness area, but it generated the most headlines. Tim and his four buddies hiked into the woods just weeks before his wedding for a last hurrah, carrying as much beer and whiskey as franks and beans. The next day, three stumbled back to town, babbling of dark shapes, eerie screams, and vanished friends. Eventually, the fourth groomsman was discovered, disoriented and shell-shocked. But Tim, the would-be groom and most experienced hiker of the group, was never seen again.
When Frankie Elkin arrives in Ramsey, Wyoming, she’s just in time. The four groomsmen; Tim’s father, Martin; Luciana and her trusty cadaver dog, Daisy; a professional Bigfoot hunter; and the town’s legendary Park Ranger, Nemeth, are preparing for one last search. Martin needs to bring his son’s body home – it’s his wife’s dying wish – and the four friends need to move on from that terrible night. When it becomes clear that one of the groomsmen is in no shape for a week-long trek, Frankie manages to worm her way into the motley expedition crew. Despite her lack of training, she finds herself trudging towards one of Popo Agie’s most isolated areas, Devil’s Canyon, on a needle-in-a-haystack mission that requires more physical exertion and mental sharpness than anything she’s ever done.
It doesn’t take long for Frankie to sense that something isn’t quite right. There’s palpable unease amongst the three remaining groomsmen; Martin is obsessive, bordering on manic; and Nemeth is increasingly aloof. Then the sabotages begin. Bear-proofed food goes missing, one of the groomsmen is viciously attacked, and that’s just the beginning. Even worse, everyone shares the same unnerving feeling that they are no longer alone in the wild.
With dwindling supplies and a rising sense of panic, the group is forced to make decisions they never dreamed of, and what started as a search for a lost friend, quickly becomes a battle for survival.
ONE STEP TOO FAR is a breathless race against the clock where Frankie finds herself fighting not just for answers but for her own life. Nature looms as terrifying as any evil mastermind and Gardner’s expert pacing makes this latest thriller impossible to put down.
