Monthly Theme: Jesus' Humiliation
To [the Israelites] belong the patriarchs, and from their race,
according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
(Romans 9:5)
While we focus at Christmas that Jesus is true man, flesh and blood after ourselves yet without sin, we must also remember that Jesus is also true God. He comes from the race of God's Old Testament people, but He is also the Husband that kept calling His Bride back to Himself through the prophets. Since the Israelites would not listen to the prophets, they were taken into exile into the land of Babylon for seventy years. After returning from exile, they continued to ignore the prophets of their time and of the previous generations. Finally, it came time to have the final Word on the matter.
St. Paul writes to the Galatians, "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the Law, to redeem those under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. ... So you are no longer a slave, but a son, then an heir through God" (4:4-7). None of this would have happened had not Jesus been true God in the flesh. No miracles. No resurrections. No forgiveness of sins. All of this happened because the Word of God came in the flesh. Praise God the Word for His coming in the flesh today. Amen.
