Monthly Theme: King David
One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace.
From the roof he saw a woman bathing.
(2 Samuel 11:2)
David took a walk in the early evening air. While surveying his capital city, his gaze lingered when he saw Bathsheba bathing in the court of her house. While she probably wasn't the first woman he'd seen from his roof, his eyes lingered and he began to lust after her because she was very beautiful.
David shows how something as simple as a look can be devastating to the soul. St. James writes, "Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death" (1:15). Simply out for an evening walk, David didn't think it would change his life forever.
David brought the woman into his chamber and committed adultery with her. When she became pregnant, David brought her husband back from the battlefield. When Uriah wouldn't sleep with his wife, David sent him to his death. Bathsheba brought forth a son and he died within a week. Years later, King David became an enemy of the state as one of his own sons rebelled against him.
All of this from one simple, seemingly innocent walk on the roof to catch some fresh air. Just shows how little a hole our sinful nature needs to squeeze through and cause all kinds of problems. David repented of his sin and Bathsheba became his favorite wife. They were happy and it was through their son Solomon that Jesus was born for you. God uses sinners every day to do His will because the best Christian is a redeemed sinner who places their trust in God. Trust in God and see what He can do through you. Amen.
