[The angel Gabriel said:] "The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."
(Luke 1:35)
The first stop we ahve in the New Testament about the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, comes to us from the lips of an archangel. Imagine the scene: your thirteen or fourteen-year-old daughter comes in from doing her chores and says that an angel has appeared to her and told her that she would give birth to the Son of God. How would you as the father or mother of this teenage girl react to the news?
It's not the most common of news, but it's news that had been foretold seven centuries before. The prophet Isaiah said, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel" (7:14). It should come as no surprise that the news should come, but, of course, it wasn't really expected that anyone would receive the wonderful news herself.
The enfleshment of the story begins with the Word of God. That word comes alive every time it is read and proclaimed. Watch it come alive today, won't you? Amen.
