To whom then will you liken God,
or what likeness compare with Him?
An idol! A craftsman casts it,
and a goldsmith overlays it with gold
and casts for it silver chains.
He who is too impoverished for an offering
chooses wood that will not rot;
he seeks out a skillful craftsman
to set up an idol that will not move.
(Isaiah 40:18-20)
Isaiah takes a moment during his prophesying to show the complete lunacy of those who worship idols. They wish to replace the God who created the heavens and the earth, but the best they can do is an unmoving, lifeless, worthless statue that they bow down to and pray to for help. What's that going to do for them?
Isaiah uses these stern words to remind us how great our God truly is. Nothing compares to our God or to what He can do for you. Throw away the worthless idols in your life and cling to the living, breathing God who created you. Amen.
