Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(Matthew 5:3)
Everyone seeks to be rich. Everyone wants to better themselves. We think that it comes from making ourselves richer. More popular. Even more righteous.
But Jesus says it comes by being poor. You cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven without becoming poor. "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head" (Matthew 8:20).
Jesus made Himself poor. He took on the form of the poorest of the poor so that all might inherit the kingdom of heaven through Him.
The greatest inheritance is available to you. But it's only through Jesus. Nothing about you. All about Him. Believing that is being poor in spirit. Amen.
