Monthly Theme: God's Spirit
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
(Isaiah 11:2)
God's Spirit is a resting Spirit. He rests upon those in whom He dwells. At Jesus' Baptism, John the Baptizer bore witness about Jesus, "I saw the Spirit descend from Heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him. I myself did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit'" (John 1:32-33). Isaiah's prophecy came true in the Jordan River.
The Holy Spirit rested upon Jesus to show John that He was the long-awaited Messiah. The Holy Spirit rests upon each of us in our Baptism. The Holy Spirit makes each one of us God's child. We have been sealed "with the seal of the living God" as part of Revelation's 144,000 (7:2). Resting upon Jesus, the Holy Spirit fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy. Resting on you, the Holy Spirit guides us to do the same things through faith. Amen.
