Monthly Theme: King David
[David said:] "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD's anointed,
or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD."
(1 Samuel 24:6)
David was on the run. Much like a fox being chased by hounds. Many times Saul caught up to David. Many times Saul made a nearly fatal slip in his paranoid delusions.
Once in the cave of En-gedi, David snuck up on Saul and cut the corner off of his robe (v5). Another time David took Saul's spear while he slept (26:9-12). Both times David taunted Saul for his lack of vigilance in his own personal safety.
Despite the smile on David's face, he still maintained his innocence in any revolutionary goings-on in Israel. He says, "This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands ... Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you" (v10).
David knew that he would be king after Saul's death. David also knew that Saul's life was in God's hands. As David told his friend Abishai, "Who can lay a hand on the LORD's anointed and be guiltless?" (26:9). You have laid a hand on the LORD's anointed. You are the reason Jesus was nailed to the Cross. But you are the one redeemed by His love for you that sent Him to die for your sins. Go in peace. God has spared you. Amen.
