The chief priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while He was still alive, 'After three days I will rise.' Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples go and steal Him away and tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead'..."
(Matthew 27:62-64)
The Jewish leaders were still worried. They were so worried that they didn't even bother keeping their own laws about the Sabbath but came before Pilate to make this request. They were still afraid about what Jesus had said when He was still alive.
The Jewish leaders ask that Pilate post a guard outside Jesus' tomb to make sure no one tried to fabricate a resurrection from the dead. Pilate turned it around and put that responsibility on the Jewish leaders. So a group of the Temple guards were dispatched to the garden near Golgotha to make sure that Jesus stayed in the tomb until after His statement was refuted. They sealed the stone so that no one could move it. Then the guards sat and waited. Tune in next time to see what they waited for. Amen.
