''When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:54)''
The Gospel writers make a concerted effort to show faith among the unlikely. Especially since the established religious authorities had no faith in Jesus. It is the most unlikely that express their faith. The Syro-Phoenician woman. Jairus. The thief on the cross.
Here we have a hardened soldier who has witnessed many executions. Death was nothing new for him. It was an everyday occurrence for him. Each of them blended together. Nothing new would be found in these executions. Just three more Jews who needed to be wiped off the face of the earth.
But all the miracles that surrounded Jesus' execution. The way He died. '''THIS''' was different. No human being could ever just '''WILL''' himself to die. But Jesus did just that. And that was enough to convince him that this Jesus was the Son of God. And his testimony helps cement your faith. Amen.
