This is day 7 of our Journey:
The promised son is finally born...and to a 90 year old woman, no less! Isaac brings both laughter and strife into the home, as a result, Hagar and Ishmael are sent away. Reading on, God tests Abraham’s faith by asking him to sacrifice the life of his son. Abraham passes the test, and at the last minute God provides a substitute...another beautiful example that points to the future Salvation through Christ. Today’s reading ends with the death and burial of Sarah as Abraham purchases land in Canaan as a burial plot.
Join me in Genesis 21-23 as we see God work in the life of Abraham and begin to understand the lengths that God has gone to to save us from ourselves.
Key verses:
Genesis 21:6-7
Sarah said, “God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 She went on to say, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!”
Genesis 22:8
“God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together.
Genesis 23:19
After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
