This is day 65 of our journey.

Today we will read a continued variety of commandments that speak to the physical and spiritual purity of the Israelite people. These includes basic sanitation practices as well as regulations regarding who may serve in the assembly.  In all these laws, the emphasis is the holiness of God and the proper treatment of others: do not take their means of profit as security, do not prevent them from gleaning your fields, do not return them to their slavemaster.  If these laws are fulfilled, God promised that "he will elevate you above all the nations he has made".

Join me in Deuteronomy 23-26 to learn what it means to "be a people holy to the Lord your God."

Key verses:

Deuteronomy 23:21

When you make a vow to the Lord your God you must not delay in fulfilling it, for otherwise he will surely hold you accountable as a sinner.

Deuteronomy 24:6

One must not take either lower or upper millstones as security on a loan, for that is like taking a life itself as security.

Deuteronomy 25:16

For anyone who acts dishonestly in these ways is abhorrent to the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 26:19

Then he will elevate you above all the nations he has made and you will receive praise, fame, and honor. You will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he has said.
