This is day 275 of our journey.
In Matthew 13, we see the crowds continuing to follow Jesus in order to listen to his teaching. Jesus teaches them using parables. Time and again he compares the life of the follower to everyday activities. Then, in private, he explains the parables to his disciples so that they can fully understand him. Matthew 14 gives two familiar stories that display Jesus' power over nature. The chapter begins with a retelling of the execution of John the Baptist. Jesus responds to this news by seeking a solitary place, but when the people hear that Jesus is near, they follow him. Jesus teaches a crowd of over 5000 men, then, when evening comes, rather than sending them home, Jesus miraculously provides them with food. After they have eaten, Jesus sends them away and finally gets that quiet moment of solitude he wanted. Jesus' disciples have gone ahead of Jesus in their boat and Jesus shows his power once again as he walks out to them on top of the water.
