Today we’re sitting down with Christina Kim, founder of Secret Cacao Garden; someone who’s artisanal cacao brews and bites you’ll all come to wish were postmate-able.
As I am recording this, Christina is currently, going off of her last social media post, in Satipo, Peru. The lady’s on a mission. One that, through connecting with global cacao farming communities, you, I, herself, and the approximate - not quite sure on the exact numbers here but I am just going to count the rest of the 7.7 billion human beings as fellow chocolate lovers too - on what sustainable livelihoods look like for those within the cacao industry.
We’re on the receiving end of that warm mug of cocoa, but there’s a lot that goes into making that nightly ritual accessible…or that favorite chocolate bar, cake, you name it. It’s an industry that’s deeply rooted in its unethical approach and capitalization on environment, and communities alike.
Hence people such as Christina. She actually entered my life by way of previous guest, Jason Logan and The Toronto Ink Company; this all encompassing flurry of artisanal healing chocolates, exotic honeys, herbal infusions, all via the lens of equitable farmer-buyer relationships, a holistic addressal of the bean-to-bar process, not to mention this insane kismet connection we share in sharing the same birthdays, May 4th Taurus baby!
Former nurse, pilates instructor, and wellness coach turned globetrotter with a penchant for chocolate, the life it gives, and the many mouths it feeds.
