This is the seventh episode of our podcast, Your Weekly Fix. Earlier this week, in Glasgow, at the COP26 Summit, PM Modi pledged that India would cut its emissions to net zero by 2070.
Importantly, Modi said India will take its non-fossil fuel energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030 in order for us to meet 50% of our energy requirements from renewables.
What does all this mean? Can India meet these new, ambitious targets? To move from being overwhelmingly dependent on fossil fuels for energy needs to meeting 50% of our energy requirements from renewables in less than 10 years is a very tall order. Environmentalist Sunita Narain joins us on the podcast to explain the expectations from COP26. In this interview, she calls out the hypocrisy of the developed world that got rich on the back of fossil fuels.
