The twelve days of Yule were a special winter celebration in ancient Europe, of which some traditions and symbols have been adopted by our modern day Christmas. Starting at dusk on the day before the Winter Solstice, the twelve days of Yule represent the twelve months of the year - saying goodbye to the year that has passed, and inviting in the year to come.
