Chapter 9

Show Up to the Arena of Life

Opportunity is missed by most people

because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

— Thomas A. Edison

When we have vision and mission clearly in mind, excuses are useless and they fade away.

These “words of the wise” are true in any profession. It’s easy to let our standards drop because society as a whole has become more relaxed in how it operates. Our standards should never shift like sand; they should be the solid foundation of who we are as a person. The quality of our work represents our family, our community, and ultimately, our country.

Continue to set the bar high by showing up, listening, and reflecting on what you do daily—and how you do it.

Action Steps:

● Show up five minutes early everywhere you go.

● Write your vision statement: who do you want to be and what do you want to accomplish in your lifetime?

● Develop a mission statement: what drives you daily to be excellent?

● If creating a mission or vision statement is too difficult, find one quote that you love and post it everywhere to encourage you to improve daily.

● Follow a couple of people who are successful and try to use their daily habits to improve your life.

● Don't just participate in life’s arena, be a gladiator in it!
