Fiormelissa Johnson, my also called FJ by her colleagues. She is one of four siblings. She originates from the Dominican Republic, as many others that came before her in pursuit of the American Dream. Her father used to say, “Education is the way out of poverty,” She understood at an early age, what poverty looked like; she lived it and experienced it in two countries. One of her fondest memories, was her Dad teaching her how to read and it took him one day. He used these “Cuentos Foneticos” Spanish Phonics books and she learned to read in about a day. She ended up skipping kindergarten because, that moment has defined and encouraged her passion for education and community advocacy. Nothing came easy, she struggled in high school and even in college, but she obtained her GED and obtained three degrees after that. She spent her entire career focused on education, social advocacy and mental health. She aspires to become a political advocate in the future, focused on improving the quality of life of all members in her community of Elmont, NY As a mental health counselor, I teach my clients to create what I call,As a mental health counselor, I teach my clients to create wall, “The Comfort Bag is is where I keep things that bring me joy and comfort. I develop people to reach their higher than they thought was possible, because building people is building the world.
