Description

Today I look at the common misconception that Anorexia Nervosa is an illness that exclusively or primarily concerns the youth. Whilst it is true that the development is often rooted in one’s childhood trauma, this does not mean to say that it cannot extend beyond the boundaries of one’s childhood and that it cannot emerge in its entirety in later years. Following from this, I look at the idea that Anorexia isn’t necessarily caused by a singular traumatic event. I will seek to reconstruct the narrative around trauma, proposing rather that trauma might encompass a number of events or a period of time – perhaps in one’s developmental stages - that may stand out as particularly unsettling for an individual.
