Cognitive science is a fascinating area of study that aims to understand how the mind works as an information processing machine. For anyone interested in neuroscience or psychology, it’s important to understand the basics of cognitive science. So in this week’s episode, I’m talking to cognitive scientist and YouTuber, Dr. Ryan Rhodes.

Ryan is Assistant Teaching Professor for the Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science, where he teaches interdisciplinary courses on language, cognition, and the brain. He received a PhD in linguistics from the University of Delaware, where he worked as lab manager for Arild Hestvik’s psycholinguistics ERP lab, and an MA in linguistics from Fresno State, where he worked on the Chukchansi Yokuts language documentation project. His current work combines electrophysiological (EEG) and behavioral measures to investigate mental representations of linguistic structure, auditory prediction, and rule learning.

In addition to his work as an educator and scientist, Ryan is also the creator of two YouTube channels about cognitive science and linguistics. In this video, we mainly refer to his original channel, which is just called “Ryan Rhodes,” where he posts videos that serve as university-level introductory cognitive science lectures. His newer channel, called “Language of Mind,” where he creates shorter videos that dive into specific aspects of cognitive science and linguistics.
