1. So, how do we know that Mary was a “[Black woman]?” Because she was married to “[Joseph]” (who was a member of the “Tribe of Judah,” (Lk.2:4-5). The “Tribe of Judah” was Israel’s dark-skinned tribe; established by “Judah,” (4th son of Jacob), Hebrew Israelite marrying a “Canaanite/African” woman (Gen.38). And under the “Law” of Moses, Hebrew men were not allowed to marry “Inter-tribally” (Gen.36:5-10). They could only select women of their tribe to marry and begin their family. So, since the Tribe of Judah began w/African woman, Judah could only graft in more Africans into his tribe. So, the Tribe of Judah was a distinct tribe than the other “11” “of the 12 Tribes of Israel; they were dark-skinned people! And this tribe remained the “dark-skinned” tribe, even until this day. Jesus descended from the Tribe of Judah (Heb.7:14).
2. So, we know that Joseph could only marry “Mary” if she also belonged to the “Tribe of Judah!” This is how we know that Mary was a Black woman.
3. We also know that “Mary” was a Black woman because of the physical attributes of her Son “Jesus” – Scripture tells us that Jesus’ hair was “Woolly” (like Black ppl), and his feet described as “Brass” (dark-brown) Rev.1:14-15). And Jesus could only have inherited his physical traits from his mother since He did not have an earthly father, but was begotten of the “Holy Spirit” (Matt.1:18). So, when we think of these biblical characters, let us now visualize them as they were (in truth), according to Scripture.
MARY’S BACKGROUND
The Lord didn’t randomly choose Mary to bear His “Son-Jesus” - He prepared her from the time of her conception.
Mary’s parents, “Joachim and Anna,” were well into age, and they had not conceived. During this timing, under the Old Testament Law, this was considered a curse! Therefore, Joachim was not allowed to enter the Temple to give offerings unto the Lord.
So he pleaded his case before the Lord, and asked God to bless his wife to conceive. He also made a vow to the Lord that if He granted his prayer-request, he would dedicate the child unto the Lord.
So the Lord opened up the womb of his wife (Anna) and she bore Joachim a baby girl “[Mary]!”
Mary was given to service as a consecrated virgin in the Temple in Jerusalem when she was Three years old, much like Hannah took her son, Samuel (Israel’s 1st prophet), to the Temple for dedication under the Old Testament era (1Sam.1:22-28).
So Mary wasn’t just “[Favored]” of the Lord, she was “[Highly Favored]!”
Scripture Ref:
“AND HAVING COME IN, THE “[ANGEL]” SAID TO HER, “REJOICE, “[HIGHLY FAVORED ONE],” THE LORD IS WITH YOU; BLESSED ARE YOU AMONG WOMEN!”
BUT WHEN SHE SAW HIM, SHE WAS TROUBLED AT HIS SAYING, AND CONSIDERED WHAT MANNER OF GREETING THIS WAS.
THEN THE “(ANGEL)” SAID TO HER “DO NOT” BE AFRAID, “[MARY],” FOR YOU HAVE FOUND “(FAVOR)” WITH GOD.
AND BEHOLD, YOU WILL CONCEIVE IN YOUR WOMB AND BRING FOR A “[SON],” AND SHALL CALL HIS NAME “[JESUS]! (Lk.1.28-31).
