The belief in a condemning god is just that a belief. The god of condemnation and bombast is only a belief, acted out by its adherents. The Old Testament God of violence and conquest was challenged by the Sage of Nazareth. He revealed a diety of a very different character and he embodied that character in his own life. It is a strange distortion that now attributes that same Bronze Age cruelty to this enlightened man of peace and forgiveness. He taught that we suffer, not because God is pissed off at us, but because we belief that He is. This realization is the true Messiah and brings the forgiveness of Original Innocence.
