Description

Welcome to Over the Rainbow, an LGBTQ+ podcast dedicated to queer education and queer representation. Hosted by Rachel Keighley (she/her).

Episode 21: Trans visibility, gender dysphoria and LGBTQ+ education with Phil Hill (they/them)

Phil is a trans, genderqueer and mental health activist who uses their social media platform to talk about all things gender and mental health in a raw and open way. They are also writing a book to make the workplace more inclusive to trans people, so do keep an eye out for that.

In today’s episode Phil and I talk about trans visibility. We discuss the difficulties of growing up in a cis-gendered, binary world and how a lack of trans visibility can limit your exploration of your gender when you can’t see yourself.

We answer the questions of how you can navigate the world without this representation, and what effects this lack of representation has on young people?

From there we talk about the importance of LGBTQ+ education from a young age and engaging with trans folk to understand their lived experiences, what it means to be trans, and what gender dysphoria is.
