Description

“We are called to ministry, but unless we do it God’s way, with God’s power, using God’s word, God’s gospel, for God’s glory, we’re going to go down some rabbit trails that are going to lead to discouragement and early burn-out.”

A podcast for Pastors, Leaders, and Re-Thinkers of the Jesus way. Please subscribe, comment, and share. Music compliments of Aaron Strumpel.

[0:00] Welcome to the Quiet Reformation.

[0:50] Introducing Jim Cymbala

[3:34] Covid led to connection which led to the content of the book

[5:35] Acts 20:13-38 - Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. 2 Timothy 1:6-10 - Fan into flame the gift of God

[7:43] Negative circumstances shouldn’t always determine the will of God. 2Cor 11:23-31

[9:15] In adapting to the culture, are we losing the basic essence of Christian ministry?

[11:25] The Holy Spirit is the only one who can lead the Church.

[12:30] Losing Jesus is a net gain for the Church

[13:35] A.W. Tozer: “If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95 percent of what we do would go on and no one would know the difference. If the Holy Spirit had been withdrawn from the New Testament church, 95 percent of what they did would stop, and everybody would know the difference.”

[16:00] Are you working for Christ or listening to Christ and responding to Him?

[18:30] Getting desperate for God isn’t fun, but essential.

[21:10] Is our preaching alive? Water can come in liquid form and refresh people or you can serve them a block of ice. If we re-preach a message, we must rely even more on the Holy Spirit.

[23:10] Living with a predominant sense of failure, even with a “big church”, because there is so much more need. A godly burden motivates ministry.

[24:45] Everything is going to disappear, but people. 1 Thessalonians 2:18-20 - For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but Satan obstructed us. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

[28:50] Closing Reflections

[29:30] Acts 6 - appointing servants so that those leaders at the core of the Church can have the priority of not just doing actions, but staying tuned in on what the Lord is saying.

[32:45] The Spirit doesn’t just speak to one person; how does communal discernment work?

[35:40] Manifold wisdom gives a bigger picture of God’s glory and God’s story; listening to God doesn’t mean you do the talking.

[39:05] Are the academy and the local church at odds with one another?
