Description

Erika Duarte, GSMA grad of 2018, discusses how she ended up choosing Cal Maritime as a transfer cadet with little knowledge of the maritime industry, what led her to pursue a career with ABF Freight, and how she has progressed in the company over the last few years. She touches on how instrumental upperclassmen were in opening her eyes to different career opportunities and how roles at Cal Maritime, such as watch standing, helped her develop leadership, responsibility, and attention to detail skills. We also discuss how she entered ABF in their management trainee program, before moving to operations supervisor. Erika highlights problem-solving and communication skills that are highly valuable for any position in operations and discusses the best ways to stand out in the interview process.
