The last words of Jesus, " IT IS FINISHED" was not just an expression to mark the end of the long season of suffering. He was not saying "Finally, the Lord is of my head. Let me go". It was not a dying cry of a matter. Some people even think when He said, "It is finished"; He was speaking to man. No, He was not speaking to man neither was He speaking to the people who were around Him. He was addressing God.
And that is why it is crucial to study the text when you are reading the word of God and find out the background; the meaning behind the meaning.
Here is the meaning of the words " IT IS FINISHED":
- The Search is Over/finished { He is the perfect sacrifice} - Christ has redeemed us with precious blood as a lamb without blemish and defect. He's the only lamb without blemish and defect. All the other lambs had defects.
- Work accomplished - The work Jesus did does not need improvement. (Hebrews 10:11-12)
- Debt fully paid/settled - As we celebrate Passover, know that your debts are paid. Jesus paid Himself; He paid the debt we could not pay. (Isaiah 6:11)
- Sentence fully served - It is in your favor, beloved child of God. He served the sentence, paid the debt, gained victory, and perfected the work because He was the perfect sacrifice of God, the Lamb of God who takes away the world's sin.
- Victory Day - Victory gained. Christ's victory over the evil forces at Calvary was not a secret; it was a public spectacle. (Colossians 2:15)
