“Three Russians, two airplane pilots and a professor, are in Juneau this afternoon enroute to the Arctic to attempt rescue of 89 marooned men on an ice floe.” The Daily Alaska Empire, March 20, 1934. The shipwrecked men had already been forced to endure two dangerous months on the ice, it seemed likely that time was starting to run out.
