In this episode, we explore the inner world of the Foley artist Alyson Moore who works at Warner Brothers Studios. She shares the history of the Foley artist and how The Foley stage got its name. Alyson describes the three main categories of Foley and how she met Michelle Obama and more.
Foley Artist Alyson Dee Moore was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. Her parents were both actors. Her father was notable character actor Alvy Moore who played Hank Kimball, the County Agent, on the CBS television series “Green Acres”. Her career started with a few small acting roles when she was eight years old, but her big break came at the age of ten when she got a job as an anchor on a local news program for children called “Elementary News” that ran for two years and received a Golden Mike Award. She was the entertainment reporter and went to many movie premieres and even wrote her own copy.
In 1998 started working at Warner Bros. Studios. This is where she shifted into the feature film world and really honed her craft. She is now part of one of the top Foley teams in Hollywood and has worked on many films that have gone on to win Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing including “The Dark Knight” and “Inception”. Other notable films she’s worked on are “Frozen”, “Crazy Rich Asians”, “The Batman”, “Black Adam” and various video games such as “Halo 5: Guardians” the “Arkham” series and the Star Wars game “Fallen Order”. Working at Warner Bros. has been a great experience. In 2010 she had the great honor of hosting an informal tour of the Foley Stage for Michelle Obama and her two daughters and a few weeks later Angela Merkel also paid a visit. Ms. Moore also enjoys speaking to film students and teaching them how important Foley is to their student films and future film projects. She has spoken at the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation at USC, The Art Institute, SCAD and TIFF to name a few.
She has been nominated 13 times for an Emmy Award and was fortunate enough to win in 1997 for her work in “The Shining” and then again in 2019 and 2022 for the HBO show “Barry”. She also has been nominated over 40 times for an MPSE Award (Motion Picture Sound Editors) and won seven times.
She works at Warner Bros with her Foley partner Chris Moriana and mixer Darrin Mann. Look out for some of the films she’s worked this year including “The Flash”, “Ghosted” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”.
