Dedicated to Craig J. Hazen whom most of these insights came from.

In the common folktale of “Sleeping Beauty,” a Princess whom is adored by the King is put into a deathlike trance by an evil Witch; an impenetrable wall of thistles grows up around the Princess’s castle; and all is restored only when, in fulfillment of a prophecy, a Prince comes and raises her up with the kiss of love; this is followed by a marriage feast and the declaration that “they lived happily ever after.”

The Princess - the human race

A deathlike trance - fallen and unable to save herself

The witch - The Devil (wants to destroy the beauty)

The King - God The Father

The Prince - A savior (is driven by love to overcome the wall of thistles and barriers to reach the fallen princess)

The Prince’s Kiss (act of love) raises the princess to happiness evermore

In “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the plot is set into motion when a vain, wicked queen consults her magical mirror and learns that her beautiful stepdaughter, Snow White, is now the “fairest in the land.” Instantly resentful, the queen enlists a woodsman to murder Snow White, but he cannot commit the act and exhorts the young girl to escape. In the forest Snow White discovers a cottage inhabited by seven eccentric dwarfs, who warmly welcome her into their home after she offers to cook and clean for them. The queen eventually learns of Snow White’s whereabouts and, disguising herself as an old hag, fatally poisons her stepdaughter with a tainted apple. The heartbroken dwarfs stand guard over the girl’s body until a handsome prince restores her to life with a kiss.

Snow White - The human race

Vain wicked queen - The Devil (again, jealous of beauty and wants to destroy it)

The woodsman - perhaps the Snake in the garden

Snow White is now lost in the woods, far from the kingdom

The Seven Dwarfs - Seven Sins

Sleepy - Sloth

Grumpy - wrath

Doc - Pride

Happy - Lust

Bashful - Gluttony

Sneezy - envy

Dooey - greed

A deathlike trance - now fallen and unable to save herself, but the poison is such that an act of true love would reverse it’s effects

A Prince - A savior - travels into the darkness of the forest to find her and bring her out

The names for the characters might be different, but the archetypal roles they play are not. Are there certain basica characters , themes, and stories built into all of us in some way? Given the pervasive evidence, this appears to be the case. But an even more specific conclusion might be warranted. The basic gospel story itself might very well be imprinted on us at some sublevel of awareness.
