Genesis
2:5b-9
For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground: but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
There was no man to till the ground…
And breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. – John 20:22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. – The Hebrew word is ruach which is the same word for Spirit
Then God proceeded to make Paradise for the Man, the Garden of Eden
15-17
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
To tend and keep it… Paradise is not paradise without work.
But why the temptation of the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Why is that a part of paradise? It is impossible for us, mankind, to truly be free if we are not given the opportunity to choose. Adam had a single way in which he could sin against the Lord. One covenant, one rule, one way to disobey God. This gave him the opportunity to sin, yes, but it also gave him free will. He had the ability to freely choose to be obedient to God.
