In this episode, we dive into the intriguing topic of "Person versus Performance." Although we usually go live on Facebook, we're currently experiencing some technical difficulties, but don't worry, we'll be back soon. In the meantime, you can catch our pre-recorded episodes every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
This week, we started our five-week course and had a thought-provoking conversation about the distinction between being a person and performing as a parent. We explored our childhood experiences and how they shaped our beliefs about being valued and doing well. What we discovered was truly fascinating.
As parents, we aim to be intentional in our approach, recognizing that there isn't necessarily a "right" way to parent. It's more about what aligns with our values and understanding where we're coming from. We shared personal experiences from our group, where performance and being praised for doing well led to internalizing these beliefs and behaviors.
For example, Alysia realized that she had been uncomfortable with activities like meditation and journaling, fearing silence and her thoughts. However, she gained insights into herself and became a better parent by embracing these practices and demonstrating self-care to her child.
By separating our thoughts from our programming, we can regain control and make conscious choices about how we want to live our lives. We discussed how the pressure to be perfect, wearing masks, and procrastination can be ways of escaping the fear of not doing things perfectly.
Join us next week as we explore the importance of "Staying in the Present." We'll discuss how practices like journaling and meditation can help us be better parents and recognize when our reactions are influenced by our past experiences.
Despite the technical glitches and the bright metaphorical light shining on us during this episode, we hope you find inspiration in our discussion about the journey of self-discovery and intentional parenting. Until next time, keep healing and keep being imperfect parents!
