Today, the cardinal sin we call greed ultimately originated from our primal need to consume and nourish ourselves while attempting to outrun savage predatory rivals in the life-or-death struggle of our Stone Age survival. Greed also enabled us to establish stronger lineages for the future generations of our species. Later on, religion assumed a leading role and commanded that its newly discovered Christian creed be tamed and followed, so that its voracious heathen spirit could find liberation through abstinence and fasting, ultimately leading to salvation
