As the church in Rome listened to the opening lines of Paul’s letter they would have been drawn into deeper relationship with the one it was talking about. They would have heard that the whole of the Old Testament points to him. They would have listened to a radical declaration that there is a new Lord far higher and greater than Caesar and they would have understood to a greater degree that what they’d discovered in the good news about Jesus was nothing short of revolutionary.
