Description

Armoured Cable is an electrical cable coated with a protective sheet that secures its inner components from abrasion. Other than traditional electrical cables, this cable is rigid and fulfils its purpose optimally. Mainly, it is a bunch of wires that are encased in a metal coating or tube which may be further covered in a plastic insulation layer. This cable has a metallic layer of strips or threads that safeguards the conductors from external forces. This vulnerable force to cables are rodents and accidental impacts that prevent any internal irregularities from causing the release of dangerous energy levels to the outside in environments.

The electric cable is insulated with non-flame propagating thermoplastic compounds with low emission of smoke and toxic gases, covered with metal armour. Installation of these cables is fast and economical, so there’s no need for rigid conduit pipe, such as threading, bending, and making support when we use armoured cable. It also prevents the production of waste because they are available in continuous rolls of convenient length, further providing the ultimate protection against electrostatic, magnetic, and common modes.

Classifications of these cables are as follows.

Wire-Braid Armoured Cable: This type of cable is also known as basket-weave armour. It is mainly utilized when light and flexible protections are needed. A wire braid cable is designed much like a fibrous braid. The metal is pleated over the cable as the exterior covering and this pleating is made from galvanized steel, copper, bronze, or aluminium.

Steel Wire Armoured Cable: They are commonly abbreviated as SWA cables. One of the most renowned cables with armouring. These cables are favourable for high drop areas and can withstand superficial mechanical forces and extensive tension. Cables with many cores use Steel wire armour as it withstands high pull loads.

Steel Tape Armoured Cable: This type of Armoured cable is favourable for wiring applications whose current requirement does not exceed more than 35kV. It is ideal if you want to work on some wiring in a vermin and termite-infested area. It is popularly used in wiring installations associated with construction, underground mines, and petrochemical applications.
